YouTube and 15 minutes. US Supreme Court sides with Corporations.
YouTube now supports 15 minutes of fame.
What can you say in 15 minutes? What would you want to say in 15 minutes?
Advertisers and politicians have used a lot less time to convince us of many things.
Now with 15 minutes of fame, YouTube has opened the doors wider for you and corporations to put out your opinions.
Sadly corporations have a much larger budget and the ability to use that budget how ever they please. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4, in January, that free-speech rights permit groups like corporations and labor unions to directly spend on political campaigns. The court overturned a 20-year-old ruling that banned corporate and labor money and threatens similar limits imposed by 24 states. The prevailing justices also struck down part of the landmark McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that barred union- and corporate-paid issue ads in the closing days of election campaigns.
“The notion that the First Amendment dictated [today's ruling] is, in my judgment, profoundly misguided,” Justice John Paul Stevens wrote for the others. “In the context of election to public office, the distinction between corporate and human speakers is significant. Although they make enormous contributions to our society, corporations are not actually members of it,” he added.
What this means is simple even with the 15 minutes of open forum provided by YouTube and many other media sharing site, corporations now have the ability to control more and more of our elections. The idea of being able to buy an election is not new, but now you can do it right out in the open and not behind closed doors.
But fear not, there are some great response to corporations free speech — take this video about Target. -
