Why do we send our children to school? Education or Sports? 13 yr old dies playing Middle School football on his birthday.

October 30, 2011 Category :Family 0

I didn’t play sports in school. Why? Simple I didn’t want to, I didn’t have that something that they wanted. I wasn’t tall, big, bulky, fast or strong.  So I can’t really see why people let their children play sports in school.

I know that it is claimed it can be a character builder, helps foster team work and can round out the participants school experience.

I also know people are at risk of dying  when they play sports. Yes, everyone is at risk when they do anything. Some risk is acceptable and some is just foolish.  School sports, IMHO, are not foolish.  The parents and school administrators are at fault.  They aren’t the only ones at fault.  The sports loving public is… we place so much on being bigger, stronger and better than everyone else.  Colleges give money to those who are good in sports – not necessary those who’ll do well in their educational pursuits.

So when I see a story like the one below, I’m shocked, mad and wondering what were these people thinking?  I know the town in question well.  It is a small town, with no industry, no reason for children to stay in the area and it isn’t growing.  This happens in lots of little town and some see college as a good way out.  College cost money – so families save, save and scrimp.  Not everyone can just layout the money for college.  Scholarships, Grants, and Loans make up the difference.  Having a child who is in to sports and does well might find a sports scholarship coming her/his way.  Academic scholarships are available but can be out of reach. Small town schools might not have the most up to date equipment, fancy science labs or the money for a wide range of electives.

Sports – almost every school district in my state has some sort of sports program.  For many sports is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.  A tunnel to a better life, college, more money, opportunity to shake off the dirty of a little town and see the world. Okay, I’m over doing it a bit, but you can see where I am coming from.

Start putting more money in to schools, colleges and technical schools.  Help students find out where they will best fit.  College isn’t for everyone, neither is a small town.

I’m not faulting the parents of this young man, I’m faulting all of us.

.XXX – oh ya baby – more money and censorship!

.XXX Domain – I agree totally that the issue is money and the First Amendment (pre-censorship).

I’m clearly a bit of a whack job when it come to the First Amendment.  I see any attempt to alter or redefine what it says as an attack on the XXX - Tools or for Fools?rights of all.  Yes, I know people have different views on this.  That is what it is all about.

If I don’t like someones view point on the net, the site, their blog or even them then I don’t have to interact with them.  I can block, close or otherwise ignore them.  I often do.  What I will not do is say that they can’t speak, I may personally voice opposition to their speech.  I won’t pre-censor.

It isn’t the right road to take, start pre-censoring and you’ve opened up a can of worms you’ll never close.

Where I live we have a ‘church’ (cult) that goes around a pickets at funerals, have protest signs that could be considered offensive and they make a point of targeting funerals of high profile people, soldiers and do so in a way that is again considered offensive by some.

Would I like to see a law in place to stop their protest. *NO*, but I do think that the current restrictions that are in place have merit.  Here they are limited to time, place and distance, which I feel is right up to the line of pre-censorship.

The .XXX domain is optional, and the reasons for it’s existence are clearly monetary and an attempt to pre-censor speech.

Yes, yes. I know what about the children. What about protecting them? They shouldn’t be able to access sites are pornographic. This just gives parents tools they can use. Wow… It isn’t going to have that much of an impact at controlling children’s access to .XXX site.  .Com sites will still exist, adult entertainment will still be on Starz, Showtime, HBO, Netflix Skinamax (Cinemax) and on and on.

Parents have had access to V-Chip technology in all US sold TV’s since 2000.  What affect has it had?  Does V-Chip work? Polls and studies indicate that the V-Chip is seldom used by parents, nor do they use the blocking tools available on most cable systems.

Will the .XXX domain provide parents tools to restrict access to what is considered harmful?  Yes, will they use it? No.

What real affect will the .XXX domain have – nearly none when it comes to providing a safer environment for children to use the internet, unless parents take a proactive stance.

It boils down to money and pre-censorship.

Breastmilk Milk Shakes!

September 10, 2011 Category :Family| Health 0

Our 3 year old was a #breastfed baby.  Which of course leads to some questions and some comments.
Breastfeeding - It Rocks
Even I the father had a few.  I love my wife and sometimes show it in that typical boy fashion of picking on her.

I often would ask our little one if she wanted a milk shake and then give my wife a little shake.

Did that jokingly this morning… Little one turns, lifts up her shirt, places her hand on her chest and starts shaking it.

When asked what she was doing says “Making my own milk shake.”  A minute later she says, “Just joking, I don’t have mommy milk”
